Truck rental
- Book early around month-end. Leases turn over at the end of the month, so trucks go fast in the last week. Reserve 2–4 weeks ahead.
- Pick the right size. A 10–15 ft truck usually fits a studio or 1-bedroom; 20–26 ft fits a 3–4 bedroom home.
- U-Haul has pickup locations across Greater Houston, including neighborhood dealers like gas stations and hardware stores. Reserve at uhaul.com.
- Moving within one apartment community or a few miles? A smaller truck or trailer can save money.
Storage
- Choose climate-controlled storage in Houston. Heat and humidity can damage furniture, electronics, photos and documents in a standard unit.
- Size guide: 5×5 for boxes and small items; 10×10 for about a 1-bedroom apartment; 10×20 for a 2–3 bedroom home.
- Plan for storm season. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Ask about elevation, drainage and access hours, and check your renters or homeowners insurance for stored items.
- Between homes? If your closing or lease dates don't line up, short-term storage plus a single truck trip is often cheaper than two full moves.
